Should I Choose a Pediatric Dentist or a General Dentist for My Child?
Choosing between a pediatric dentist and a general dentist depends on your child’s age, needs, and temperament.
-
Specialized Training: Pediatric dentists complete an additional two-year residency focused on treating infants, children, teens, and patients with special needs—beyond four years of dental school.
-
Age of Your Child: Pediatric dentists are ideal for younger children through the teenage years. At Beverly Pediatric Dentistry, we also have a general dentist who treats teenagers and parents, allowing continuity of care as your child grows—no need to switch offices.
-
Specialized Needs: If your child has anxiety, special needs, or complex dental concerns, a pediatric dentist provides the expertise to manage both clinical and behavioral aspects of care.
While general dentists can treat children, they do not receive the same level of specialized pediatric training or behavioral management experience.

Pediatric Dental Services in Georgetown, Washington DC
Beverly Pediatric Dentistry is a fully comprehensive pediatric dental office offering a full range of services with a conservative approach to treatment. We ensure parents are fully informed about all options, benefits, and potential risks before moving forward with care.
Below are some of the most common services performed in our office:
SEALANTS
Sealants are a thin coating applied to the pits, fissures, and grooves of the chewing surfaces of molars. Tooth structure is NOT removed; rather, sealants are added to the teeth. They can be very effective in preventing cavities since chewing surfaces are the areas where food and bacteria can most easily become trapped. Sealants are generally recommended for permanent molars, as they are more difficult for younger children to keep clean and need to remain healthy for many years. In some high-risk cases, we may also recommend sealing baby teeth. While sealants can greatly reduce the risk of cavities, they do not protect against cavities between teeth or on smooth surfaces.
SILVER DIAMINE FLUORIDE (Drill-Free, Injection-Free Cavity Treatment)
Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is an antimicrobial liquid that we apply to cavities to help stop or slow the progression of decay. There are no shots or drilling involved, making it a great option for young children or those who may not tolerate traditional dental treatment. We also use SDF to help reduce sensitivity in teeth with weak enamel. To maintain its effectiveness, SDF typically needs to be reapplied every 6 to 12 months if a definitive restoration is not placed. It is often recommended when a child is too young for traditional treatment, when cavities are small but need to be managed, or when treatment needs to be delayed. It is an excellent tool, but it does come with some disadvantages. SDF will permanently stain the treated cavity dark until the tooth is restored with a filling or crown. It is not guaranteed to completely stop the progression of decay, especially if oral hygiene and diet are not improved, and it is not suitable for very large cavities close to the nerve.
TOOTH-COLORED COMPOSITE RESTORATIONS
Tooth-colored composite restorations are white filling materials used to restore small to medium-sized cavities in baby teeth. They are a conservative and esthetic treatment option that blends naturally with your child’s smile. While most composite restorations last for the life of the baby tooth, they can sometimes fail by fracturing or developing new decay around the margins. For children at higher risk of cavities or for larger areas of decay, a stainless steel crown may be recommended to provide better long-term durability and protection.
BABY TOOTH ROOT CANAL THERAPY (PULPOTOMY)
A pulpotomy is the partial removal of nerve tissue in a baby tooth and is only recommended after careful evaluation. It is typically performed when decay has reached the nerve but the lower portion of the nerve remains healthy. The procedure involves removing the infected portion of the nerve, placing a medicated material to reduce the risk of further infection, and restoring the tooth with a filling or crown. When performed under the right conditions, a pulpotomy can successfully extend the life of the tooth, preserving chewing function and space for the permanent tooth. However, like any procedure, it can fail if the infection progresses.
EXTRACTIONS
Tooth extraction is only recommended when there are no other reasonable alternatives. This may include cases of severe decay, infection, pain in a tooth that cannot be naturally removed, or when a baby tooth is blocking the eruption of a permanent tooth. In some situations, extractions may also be recommended to help relieve crowding. Whenever possible, we encourage children to wiggle out their baby teeth naturally at home.
HABIT BREAKERS & ORTHODONTIC APPLIANCES
We offer a variety of appliances designed to guide tooth development and help prevent or correct harmful oral habits. These appliances may be used to maintain space, assist with alignment, or discourage habits such as thumb sucking. Because appliances can be costly and require cooperation, Dr. Mohammadi always considers less invasive options first. When an appliance is recommended, all benefits, risks, and alternatives are discussed in detail so parents can make an informed decision.
