Minimally Invasive Dentistry (SDF therapy) for Kids
Looking for a gentle, drill-free cavity treatment for kids in Washington DC or McLean VA? Beverly Pediatric Dentistry offers Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) therapy, a minimally invasive treatment that can help stop cavities in children without drilling or shots in certain cases. This quick and comfortable cavity treatment option is ideal for many toddlers, young children, and anxious patients.
Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is a revolutionary non-invasive treatment used to help manage cavities in children. This antimicrobial liquid can help stop tooth decay, reduce sensitivity, and slow the progression of cavities without the need for drilling in many cases. It is a painless, fast, and affordable cavity treatment option.

Not every patient with tooth decay may be a candidate for this alternative treatment. Dr. Mohammadi evaluates this option and will present it to you if appropriate for your child.

What Causes Cavities in Children?
Cavities in children develop when bacteria in the mouth produce acids that weaken tooth enamel. Frequent snacking, sugary drinks, inadequate brushing, and difficulty cleaning hard-to-reach areas can all increase the risk of tooth decay in toddlers, kids, and teens.
Baby teeth are especially vulnerable to cavities because their enamel is thinner than adult teeth. Early treatment is important to prevent pain, infection, and damage to developing permanent teeth.
What is Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)?
Untreated decay in young children remains a challenge in the U.S. and worldwide. When left untreated, it can create significant health issues and impact quality of life for children and their families.

Surgical-restorative work in young children and those individuals with special health care needs often requires advanced pharmacologic usage for behavior management such as sedation or general anesthesia.  In some cases, these alternatives are not available, nor recommended. SDF is an antimicrobial and re-mineralizing, liquid that is simply brushed onto the cavity that can stop current decay, prevent new decay in the future and decreases dental sensitivity.

Compared to a traditional filling that requires shots of local anesthetic and drilling of tooth structure, this treatment is non-invasive and more comfortable for the patient. It buys time until the patient gains trust and becomes more comfortable in the dental chair.

SDF increases access to care, improves dental health, and reduces cost. Keep in mind that SDF does not restore form or function. Teeth may still need a restoration or filling to restore function and aesthetics.

SDF cavity treatment for kids is especially helpful for young children, toddlers, patients with dental anxiety, and children who may not yet tolerate traditional dental fillings comfortably. The treatment is fast, painless, and can often delay or reduce the need for more invasive dental procedures.

After Your Child's Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) Treatment: What to Expect
Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is one of the most comfortable cavity treatments available for children. The procedure is quick, painless, and typically requires no drilling, no injections, and no recovery time. There are just a few things to know after the appointment.

Staining — what to expect:
SDF works by stopping active cavity progression, but it permanently stains the decayed area of the treated tooth dark brown or black. This color change is an expected result of the treatment, not a complication, and indicates that the SDF is working and the cavity has been successfully arrested.
Healthy tooth structure is generally not stained. Before treatment, Dr. Mohammadi will discuss which teeth are being treated and review any aesthetic considerations with you so there are no surprises.

Skin or Gum contact:
If SDF accidentally comes into contact with your child's skin or gums during application, any resulting dark spot will typically fade on its own within 1–2 weeks. Mild gum irritation may occur in some cases and usually resolves within 24–48 hours.

Eating and Drinking After Treatment:
Your child may return to normal eating and drinking after SDF treatment unless otherwise instructed by our team. No special dietary restrictions are typically required.

Follow-up Visits:
SDF is often reapplied periodically to help maintain its effectiveness and continue arresting decay. Dr. Mohammadi will evaluate the treated teeth at each recall visit and recommend additional applications when appropriate.
