What Is a Frenectomy?
A frenectomy is a simple procedure that releases a tight or restrictive frenum (the small band of tissue connecting the lips, tongue, or cheeks to the gums).
In children, this is most commonly used to treat:
-
Tongue-tie (ankyloglossia) – restricted tongue movement
-
Lip-tie – tight upper lip attachment
These conditions can affect:
-
Feeding or swallowing
-
Speech development
-
Oral hygiene
-
Tooth spacing and gum health

-
Tongue-tie affects a notable number of infants, with estimates suggesting it occurs in roughly 1 in 10 babies.
-
Studies show that restricted tongue movement can interfere with proper oral muscle development and function if left untreated.
-
Early evaluation can help prevent long-term complications related to speech and dental alignment.
Signs Your Child May Benefit from a Frenectomy
-
Difficulty sticking out the tongue or moving it side to side
-
Speech challenges or delayed articulation
-
Trouble brushing effectively
-
Gap between front teeth related to a tight frenum
-
Discomfort or tension in the mouth
Additional insights for parents:
-
Children with tongue-tie may compensate with jaw or lip movement, which can lead to strain over time.
-
A restrictive frenum can make it harder for kids to naturally clear food from their teeth—potentially increasing cavity risk.
If you’re unsure, our team is happy to evaluate your child and guide you with honest, expert recommendations.

Why Early Treatment Matters
Addressing tongue-tie or lip-tie early can support healthier development as your child grows.
Research-backed benefits of treatment may include:
-
Improved speech clarity and articulation
-
Better oral hygiene and reduced risk of decay
-
Healthier gum and tooth development
-
Improved comfort with eating and daily function
According to pediatric dental and speech-language research, early intervention can help reduce the need for more complex treatments later in childhood.

After Your Child's Frenectomy: What to Expect
A frenectomy is a quick procedure, but proper aftercare plays an important role in healing and long-term success, particularly for infants. Here is what you can expect in the days following treatment.
Appearance of the healing site:
The treated area will likely appear white or yellowish within the first 24–48 hours. This is a normal part of the healing process and does not indicate infection. The appearance of the site will gradually change as healing progresses over the next 1–2 weeks.
Feeding infants after a lip or tongue tie release:
Breastfeeding or bottle feeding can usually resume immediately after the procedure. Some infants feed more comfortably right away, while others may need a few days to adjust to their increased tongue or lip mobility.
If breastfeeding is your goal, working with a lactation consultant after the procedure may help improve feeding outcomes and support a smoother transition.
Stretching exercises:
Dr. Mohammadi will provide specific stretching instructions to perform at home. These exercises are important because they help prevent the tissue from reattaching during healing. Our team will demonstrate the stretches before you leave the office and provide written instructions for reference at home.
Pain management:
Mild soreness is common during the first few days after treatment. Children's Tylenol® or Motrin® may be used as directed for your child's age and weight. For infants, please follow the dosing recommendations provided by your pediatrician .
Eating After Treatment:
For older children, soft and cool foods are recommended during the first 24–48 hours. Yogurt, smoothies, applesauce, mashed potatoes, and similar foods are often well tolerated.
Avoid hot foods and anything rough or crunchy until initial healing is established.
When to call us: Contact our office if bleeding does not stop with gentle pressure, if swelling significantly worsens after the second day, if your child develops a fever or is unable to eat or drink adequately, or if you have any concerns about healing or recovery. Our team is always available to answer questions and help ensure your child's healing process stays on track.
