Conscious Sedation (N2O/laughing gas)

Some children feel nervous about dental treatment — and that’s completely normal. To help our patients feel calmer and more comfortable, we offer conscious sedation with nitrous oxide (Nâ‚‚O), commonly known as laughing gas, when requested by parents.

Nitrous oxide is a mild, safe sedative that helps children relax during dental procedures while remaining awake and responsive. For many children, this simple option of nitrous oxide makes dental visits smooth and stress-free.

What Is Nitrous Oxide?

Nitrous oxide is a colorless, odorless gas mixed with oxygen and gently inhaled through a small nasal mask. It has been used safely in dentistry for over 100 years and is one of the most common forms of pediatric dental sedation.

It works quickly — most children begin to feel relaxed within 2–3 minutes of breathing it in.

How Nitrous Oxide Helps Children

✔ Reduces Anxiety

Nitrous oxide produces a calming effect that helps reduce fear and nervousness during dental treatment.

✔ Increases Pain Threshold

Studies show nitrous oxide can significantly increase pain tolerance, making procedures more comfortable.

✔ Controls the Gag Reflex

It helps suppress the gag reflex, which is especially helpful during certain restorative procedures.

✔ Keeps Children Awake & Cooperative

Unlike deeper forms of sedation, children remain conscious, able to communicate, and responsive throughout treatment.

Is Nitrous Oxide Safe for My Child?

Backed by Research & Safety Data

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recognizes nitrous oxide as a safe and effective behavior guidance technique for pediatric dental patients. In fact, nitrous oxide is considered one of the safest sedation methods in dentistry when administered by trained professionals.

Nitrous oxide has an excellent safety record when administered with at least 30% oxygen, which is standard practice.

The effects wear off within 5–10 minutes after the gas is stopped, allowing children to return to normal activities the same day.

Complication rates are extremely low when used appropriately in healthy children.

Because nitrous oxide is inhaled and not metabolized by the body, it is quickly eliminated through normal breathing.

It is commonly recommended for:

  • Children with mild to moderate dental anxiety

  • Children undergoing longer procedures

  • Patients with a strong gag reflex

  • Young children who need help relaxing

Before recommending nitrous oxide, we review your child’s medical history to ensure it is appropriate and safe.

Benefits of Conscious Sedation

  • Quick onset and fast recovery

  • No lingering drowsiness

  • Adjustable throughout the procedure

  • Safe and widely used in pediatric dentistry

  • Helps create a positive dental experience

By reducing anxiety early, we help children avoid developing long-term dental fear and build confidence for future visits.

What to Expect During the Appointment

  1. A small, comfortable mask is placed over your child’s nose.

  2. Your child breathes a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen.

  3. Within minutes, they feel relaxed, calm, and comfortable.

  4. After treatment, pure oxygen is given for several minutes to clear the system.

There are no needles involved in delivering nitrous oxide.

Some children describe the feeling as: Light and tingly, Warm and relaxed or Slightly giggly.
