3D Digital X-Rays (CBCT) vs. Traditional 2D X-Rays in Pediatric Dentistry – McLean, VA

Advanced Imaging for Safer, More Accurate Care

At Beverly Pediatric Dentistry in McLean, VA, we combine a child-focused approach with modern diagnostic technology to provide the highest level of care. One of the advanced tools we use is 3D digital imaging, also known as Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT).

This technology allows us to see detailed, three-dimensional views of your child’s teeth, jaws, and surrounding structures—insight that traditional 2D X-rays simply cannot provide.

Our goal is always to improve diagnosis and treatment planning while keeping your child’s comfort and safety at the forefront.

What Is 3D Digital Imaging (CBCT)?

CBCT is an advanced type of dental X-ray that captures a complete 3D view of the mouth in a single scan.

Unlike traditional 2D X-rays, which show flat images, CBCT allows us to evaluate structures from multiple angles with exceptional precision.

This is especially helpful in pediatric dentistry, where growth and development play a key role in treatment decisions.

How Does 3D Imaging Help a Pediatric Dentist?

For children, seeing anatomy in three dimensions can make a significant difference. CBCT helps us:

  • Identify impacted or unerupted teeth

  • Evaluate the position of developing permanent teeth

  • Assess jaw growth and development

  • Plan orthodontic treatment more accurately

  • Detect hidden issues not visible on 2D X-rays

These details allow Dr. Maryam Mohammadi to make more informed, precise decisions tailored to your child’s needs.

Is 3D Imaging a Replacement for Regular 2D X-Rays?

No. 3D CBCT imaging is not a replacement for routine dental X-rays.

At Beverly Pediatric Dentistry, we carefully select the type of imaging based on your child’s specific needs. In most cases, traditional 2D X-rays provide all the necessary information.

We reserve 3D imaging for situations where additional detail is essential, such as:

  • Evaluating impacted or complex tooth positions

  • Planning surgical procedures

  • Assessing wisdom teeth with our in-house oral surgeon

  • Investigating unclear findings from standard X-rays

How CBCT Improves Diagnosis and Treatment Planning

When dental anatomy is complex, 3D imaging can completely change the clinical picture.

CBCT helps us:

  • Detect hidden infections or pathology

  • Pinpoint the exact position of impacted teeth

  • Identify fractures after falls or sports injuries

  • Evaluate root structure and surrounding bone

This level of detail reduces uncertainty and allows for more predictable, precise treatment outcomes.

Benefits of 3D (CBCT) Digital X-Rays

  • More accurate and detailed imaging

  • Early detection of problems that may otherwise go unnoticed

  • Improved treatment planning

  • Fewer repeat X-rays in complex cases

  • Greater confidence for both parents and providers

How Much Radiation Is Involved?

We understand that radiation is a common concern for parents. At Beverly Pediatric Dentistry, we use modern, low-dose digital imaging technology designed specifically with safety in mind.

To help put things into perspective:

  • A standard dental X-ray: ~5–6 μSv (about 1 day of natural background radiation)

  • A 3D CBCT scan: ~16 μSv (about 3–4 days of natural background radiation)

  • A coast-to-coast flight: ~80 μSv

These levels are considered very low, especially when used selectively and only when clinically necessary.

Radiation Safety and Protection

Advances in dental imaging technology have reduced radiation exposure by over 95% compared to older systems.

According to the Journal of the American Dental Association, routine shielding is no longer required for modern dental imaging, including CBCT.

That said, we are always happy to provide protective shielding upon request—your comfort and peace of mind are important to us.

What to Expect During a 3D CBCT Scan

A CBCT scan is quick, simple, and child-friendly:

  • Your child will stand comfortably in the imaging area

  • The scanner rotates around the head for a few seconds

  • The process is completely non-invasive and painless

Most children tolerate the scan very well due to its speed and simplicity.

Afterward, Dr. Mohammadi reviews the scan using advanced software that allows:

  • 3D visualization

  • Cross-sectional views

  • Precise measurements

This also helps us clearly explain findings and treatment options to parents.

When Might Your Child Need a 3D Scan?

We may recommend CBCT imaging if your child has:

  • Impacted or unerupted teeth

  • Dental trauma from a fall or sports injury

  • Complex orthodontic concerns

  • Jaw development issues

  • Findings that require further evaluation beyond 2D X-rays
